Safety Tips

When cycling, it goes without saying that you should follow proper procedures at all times in order to be safe. Listed below is a brief description of do's and don'ts while walking, cycling, or in-line skating on County Trails:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • In Ontario, children under the age of 18 are required by law to wear a helmet while cycling.
  • Use proper equipment for cycling, including a bike that is equipped with safety features such as reflectors and lights.
  • Wear shoes and clothing that allows freedom of movement.
  • Do not wear headphones while traveling. You should be able to hear someone that you may not be able to see.
  • Lock your vehicle. Do not leave valuables such as purses, wallets, or cell phones inside.
  • Carry a cell phone in case of emergency.
  • Travel in two's or more.

Trail Etiquette

Trail etiquette can be described as the polite way to use trails. The list below outlines etiquette guidelines for users of County Trails:

  • Please be considerate of others.
  • Give an audible warning before blind turns and when passing others.
  • Cyclists should give an audible warning and be careful when passing walkers or joggers.
  • Use authorized trails. Respect closures.
  • Keep dogs on a leash.
  • Use caution around dogs and wildlife.
  • Minimize trail erosion. Avoid muddy trails and shortcuts.
  • Don't litter. Pack out what you pack in.
